First Market Stall Experience: Lessons Learned | Gilly Bee
My first handmade market stall was nerve-wracking, eye-opening, and worth every moment. Here's what I learned and what I'm doing differently next time.

My First Market Experience: Nerves, Lessons & Little Wins Along the Way
There’s something about your first market that feels like a big milestone. It’s exciting, a little daunting, and if I’m honest… just a tiny bit overwhelming. In the weeks leading up to it, my mind was full of “what ifs”. What if no one stops? What if I forget something important? What if I’ve completely overestimated my readiness?
Spoiler: I hadn’t. But I definitely learned a lot.
Getting Over the Nerves (and Just Showing Up)
Market morning arrived with a healthy dose of nerves. You know the kind, where you’re unpacking your stall but also unpacking your self-doubt at the same time. Every decision suddenly felt very important: Is this display right? Should I move that? Do I look like I know what I’m doing?
But once everything was set up and the first few people wandered through, something shifted. Conversations started. Simple ones at first and then my first few sales. People asked questions, smiled and connected.
And I realised something important: you don’t need to feel 100% confident to begin. You just need to begin.
Confidence grows in the doing.
The Power of Having Your People
One of the absolute highlights of the day was the support from friends. Whether they stopped by in person, sent a message, or checked in afterwards, it made such a difference.
Running a small business (especially putting yourself out there physically like this) can feel quite vulnerable. So having people who believe in you and who remind you why you started, means everything.
It’s those little moments of encouragement that steady you when the nerves creep back in.
If you’ve supported my little business in any way, thank you. Truly..
Preparation is Key (and I Mean Really Key)
If markets have taught me anything already, it’s that preparation isn’t just helpful, it’s essential.
There were a few things I’ll absolutely do differently next time:
Price tags on everything (no exceptions!)
This seems obvious in hindsight, but it’s so important. Not everyone feels comfortable asking for prices, and when things aren’t clearly labelled, it can create hesitation. Clear pricing makes it easier for customers to browse, decide, and buy confidently.
Clear, visible signage
Having defined categories or signage for different products would have made my stall feel more organised and inviting. When customers can quickly understand what they’re looking at, they’re far more likely to engage.
Show, don’t just tell
This was a big learning. Having display examples would have brought my products to life so much more. Imagine being able to see a book snug inside a book sleeve, or a carry-all pouch filled with everyday essentials. That instant visual connection helps people understand both purpose and value.
Next time, I’ll definitely be bringing along “working examples” so customers can picture exactly how each piece fits into their lives.
The Bits That Didn’t Quite Shine
While there were so many positives, there was one part of the experience that felt a little disappointing.
As a first-time stallholder, I expected (or maybe just hoped for) a bit of engagement from the market organisers. A quick check-in, a hello, or even a conversation about how the day was going or future opportunities.
That didn’t happen.
And while it didn’t take away from the entire experience, it did highlight how important those small interactions are, especially when you’re new. Feeling welcomed and supported goes a long way.
It’s something I’ll definitely keep in mind when choosing markets in the future.
Looking Ahead (With More Confidence and a Bigger Checklist!)
All in all, I’m really glad I took the leap.
I learned more in one day than I could have from weeks of planning. I learned what works, what needs refining, and what I’m capable of when I push past the nerves.
And the best part? This is just the beginning.
Next time, I’ll arrive with clearer signage, fully labelled products, better displays and a little less overthinking.
